  • $1,250 in cash

5 Honorable Mentions will receive:

  • Their names published in the April 2021 issue of Watercolor Artist

How to Enter

You must enter online. All entries must be submitted as digital files. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit.

Image requirements for entries: JPG files (Please try to keep the file size under 5 MB to ensure proper uploading). The viewing screen & thumbnail which you will see during the entry process is for general reference only and does not reflect the image quality that will be viewed by jurors. The file that you attach is exactly as it will appear to the jurors.

All entrants should be prepared to be able to send a hi-resolution print-quality replacement file should their entry be among those selected as a winner. For publication in Watercolor Artist, these files should be 300 dpi when saved at approximately 8×10 inches, ideally, and 5×7 inches at minimum.

All works must be original. Compositions based on published material or other artists’ work are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings executed in a workshop under another artist’s supervision or paintings based on another person’s photograph (even if copyright-free) are NOT eligible. Entries must be created primarily with water-based media (watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache or egg tempera) on a surface created for watermedia (paper; illustration board; paper-mounted board; watercolor canvas; or clay-coated surfaces, such as Claybord and Aquabord). Mixed-media entries are accepted, but watermedia must be the dominant element. Employees of Peak Media Properties LLC and their immediate families are not eligible.

Watercolor Artist reserves the right to reject work deemed unsuitable for publication or that does not meet above criteria. Work previously published at the time of submission to this contest in a national publication or receiving an award at a national-level exhibition is not eligible.

All deadlines are at 11:59 PM EST, on the specified date.

Judging and Notification

Entries will be prejudged and then finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The decision of the jurors is final.

Entries must be submitted online (11:59 pm EST) by July 31, 2020.

The following are not permitted to enter the contest: employees of Peak Media Properties LLC and their immediate family members.

All winners will be notified by September 30, 2020. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in Watercolor Artist. Non-winning entrants will not be individually notified of the results.

Ed Gilbert , owner and director of  Anglim Gilbert Gallery  in San Francisco , died over the weekend at the age of 67. A spokesperson for the gallery identified the cause of death as cancer. REBECCAH BLUM, CURATOR WHO EXPANDED BERLIN’S ART COMMUNITY, FOUND DEAD

Rebeccah Blum, an independent curator based in Berlin who was known there as an ambitious and compassionate supporter of artists, has died at age fifty-three. Her death was confirmed by her daughter, Emma, on social media. Through initiatives like Blum Fine Art Management, a firm she started in 2012, and Satellite Berlin, a platform cofounded with art advisor Kit Schulte in 2014, Blum focused her career on international collaboration. From 2007 to 2012, she directed programming at Aurel Scheibler gallery’s downtown Berlin space, ScheiblerMitte, where she oversaw solo exhibitions by Michel Auder, Anthony Goicolea, and Joe Zucker. Tate faces protests over impact of job cuts on BAME staff

The Tate is facing protests against job cuts that trade unions and others say will disproportionately affect black and minority ethnic staff as it reopens its doors for the first time in four months. A socially distanced demonstration will take place outside Tate Modern in London on Monday as the institution welcomes back the public. As many as 200 jobs are at risk in its commercial arm – which operates retail, publishing and catering – where a higher proportion of staff are BAME, according to the PCS union. “Many of these colleagues will be amongst the lowest-paid staff on the Tate estate, with some at risk earning little more than the national minimum wage, and in some of the most diverse teams across Tate,” said the union.
